Over the weekend, I finished watching the excellent Hulu series Say Nothing 📺, based on the 2018 book of the same name by writer and journalist Patrick Radden Keefe. It moves at the speed of a thriller, but with an exceptional level of depth, especially as it probes the motivations of its main characters. I would add it to a list of some of what I think are the best representations of The Troubles on screen: In the Name of the Father (1993), Bloody Sunday (2002), and 71 (2014). I’m sure I am missing other great ones as well.

It is that most wonderful time of the year when major publications come out with their “best of” lists:

I can’t believe I had never known about this Dürer masterwork. This NYT piece is an exceptional example of strong digital humanities practice in action.

How to Exclaim! - The Millions

Punctuation functions as the inky semaphore of the sentence. It tells our eyes where to linger, our minds to assimilate, and our breath to pause, catch itself, and propel the voice forward, whether that one in our heads or mouths. Punctuation is body, and no mark more than the exclamation point. As the period explodes its head, mushrooming into a !, so does the exclamation erupt from our diaphragms, pushing its way through our vocal cords into the ambient air.

When used correctly and with restraint, the exclamation point can be a thing of beauty.

I recently finished reading Babel by R. F. Kuang 📚 and goodness gracious was it a worthwhile ride. It would be impossible to design a book more expertly crafted to pique my interest: a Hogwarts-adjacent school of silvery magic, deep dives into linguistic and translation theory, sharp critiques of academia, explorations of postcolonial political thought, beautiful descriptions of a fantastical university library, and some well-meaning revolutionaries trying to make the world a better place.

Starting off my micro.blog career with an appropriately meta—and definitely not Meta—entry. Let’s see where this goes. For now, I envision my use of this platform as a unique fusion of journal and blog. Manton Reece - What to post to a microblog
